Introduction:  I am a graduate of LSU and spent several years in the School of Architecture. However, I decided to take a detour with a Social Science degree. I also graduated from the Winnona School of Professional Photography.  I am currently retired from ExxonMobil Research. While working for the petroleum research company, I had the opportunity to travel extensively. Since retiring, I have had time to pursue many of my passions. Among these are writing, photography and design.
My wife, Karen and I are members of a small church in Watson, LA, about 35 miles NE of Baton Rouge, where I serve as Associate Pastor.  I have also authored a commentary on the book of Revelation, "Revelation and the End Times."
How did you get your start on Etsy?  I took the photos for Miradora, a jewelry designer with an Etsy shop. The shop owner, Amie Bishop, introduced me to Etsy.
How did you choose your shop name?  My investments took a big hit in the '08-09 market downturn and never recovered. "Day after Day," along with another business venture, "Day by Day," are two businesses by which I am trying to develop a stream of income to take up the slack. I tell my wife I am going to have to work "day after day" to make a living - and trust the Lord, "day by day."
What does a typical day look like for you?  My shop has had very few sales, thus far, and I'm just starting to learn how to promote it - joining teams has been one way. I spend most days working my "Day by Day" job, which is a home services business, where I do everything from kitchen and bath remodeling to changing light bulbs. In the evenings I try to keep going forward with my Etsy business - which is my real passion.
If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be?  That would be a toss-up between Israel (which I've never been to) and Taormina, Sicily, which I have visited twice. Taormina is a very interesting town high in the mountains on the northeast coast of Sicily. At the edge of town, you can look straight down 700 feet into the deep blue waters of the Ionian Sea.
What is your favorite Bible verse?  1 John 3:9 "No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God."
What is your favorite Etsy item listing to feature?  "Walking Toward the Light."

Introduction

I am a SAHM of a 16 month old son named Lucas who is the absolute joy in my life! I’ve been married to my DH, Dave, for 8 years but we met online in a Christian Chat Room on AOL 12 years ago... how funny is that?!

Anyways, I have been writing poetry since I was 13 and, amazingly, still have every poem. I am a proud Navy brat – I grew up in Groton, CT where I was the “oddity” – having lived in the same house in Navy housing for 13 years. I came to know Christ in 1996 after a lot of prayers from friends and family. I am truly blessed to know and be loved by so many. I cannot thank God enough for the gifts He has entrusted me with and for the family and friends He put in my life.

How did you get your start on Etsy?

In January of 2008, I unexpectedly lost my job of 2 ½ years & had a really rough time finding a job.
With the encouragement from my husband, I joined a Beth Moore Study & started writing poetry again. It just came to me to put some poetry on a photo I had taken & it took off from there. I was suggested to try Etsy to sell my works & I never looked back!

What does a typical day look like for you?

There is no typical day for me! I am a SAHM with a 16 month old boy named Lucas so my day revolves around him for the most part. When I get a free moment, I happily dive into editing my photos and seeking out the right scripture or poem for the photo. On a good day, I’ll edit 20 or so photos and actually produce 4 or 5 prints for my Etsy shop. I like to post my new creations on my Angela’s Heartwork Facebook page first then I add them to my Etsy shop. This gives my fans on FB a special sneak peek. I also happily do custom orders. So if there is a scripture you like but I don’t have, I will make something for you. I love customizing!

If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be?

An island… any island. As long as it’s sunny with a slight breeze and I have a pen and paper in hand. Of course, I would want to stay forever, not just one day.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

I have so many! But I love James 1:18

“In His goodness He chose to make us His own children by giving us His true word. And we, out of all creation, became His choice possession.”

How beautiful is that thought? We are His choice possession… it still amazes me!

What is your favorite Etsy item listing to feature?

My poem/photo: Psalm 56:8

and my scripture/photo: Galatians 2:20-21

and Romans 8:31

When you think about improving your Etsy shop does it become overwhelming? There are so many things you could do. There is so much advice from teams, forums, friends and blog posts about how it all should be done. I've been asked by Etsy shop owners over and over "What should I do to get more sales?"

My advice is "Just One Thing!"

That's it. Just One Thing. Pick something and work on it. Just that One Thing. One Thing at a time. One Thing is do-able. One Thing won't overwhelm. Sift through the info and pick something. One Thing.

If you want to pick One Thing that will probably have the most impact, pick your item photos.  Most us need work on that. It's one of the most important things for buyers since they can't pick up, try on or see your item in person. One Thing I've learned about on-line selling is:

bad photos = no sales

Now, really, I'm not the person to ask about photography.  It is, by far, the hardest thing I have to do. I'm not a techno person. I don't like dealing with cameras and settings and computer things. Photography is all about the technical. I don't have a good camera and my computer skills are, well, not what they should be. When I start thinking about it I immediately become overwhelmed. I can't re-take all my shop photos AGAIN!  Yep, I've done it a few times. I've yet to be satisfied with it.

I've given it up and started the "Just One Thing" approach. If I try to do a large batch I get sloppy. They never look right. If I pick One Thing--one item--and try my hardest to take good photos of just that one little item, the pressure is off.

One item.  I can do that!

I can devote an hour of my time taking 50+ different shots of one little item. I can try different camera settings, different backgrounds, different lighting, different ways of showing scale, different angles, a photo collage, a different way of draping or composing, different props, different cropping. At the end of an hour I usually have 5 decent photos of that One Thing.

OK, wait a minute . . .

Before you protest that you don't have an hour to waste taking 50+ shots of One Thing, I'm not suggesting that you do this all the time. I'm suggesting you do this once in a while. Not only do you get those 5 great shots of One Thing, but you will find a new way to take your next batch of photos, you will have discovered something--One Thing--(or more), that will improve all the photos you take from this point on! That's time well spent.

How do you pick the right One Thing to try? Pick something that has the potential to be a best seller and that you might get a chance to sell and re-list over and over.

Try it. Just this One Thing.

Let me know how it goes.

Need some inspiration? Here are some CAST team members that I think have great photos and unique ways of presenting their items:

The idea for this post came about after listening to a sermon in which our pastor threw out the questions: "What would the church look like without men? What if it was just a place where women and children hang out?" That got me thinking about our CAST team and that it would be great to try to identify the CAST shops that are run by men or are husband/wife, father/daughter or father/son partnerships.

This is our last installment.
Steve of sbradney

Based in the Lancaster Pa. area.

I am available to shoot your Events, Engagement, Portraits, Wedding, or Art projects.

I started taking photos as soon as I could hold my Dad's old box camera. Remember those?

My approach to photography is pretty straight forward; either in my art or portrait photography, “capture the moment”…what ever that moment is….joy, excitement, anger, anticipation, in short “details.” You will see that my work is not overly edited or photoshopped…I am not into phony …..what I find beautiful in people and things, is seeing them as they are, rather then making them into be someone they are not……..

I have won several awards from my local art association (Lancaster County Art Association).

My wife and I are Child Advocates for Compassion Int. Sales in my Etsy shop support our ministry with Compassion.

Glen of Sneath

I'm Glen Slagle, owner of Sneath's Chainmaille! I am a full-time student studying "International Logistics" and I want to eventually be the guy working in the background, coordinating shipments of bibles and supplies to other countries. I've been working with my church's High School youth group as a worship leader/helper for 9 years (since I was a freshman).

My chainmaille jewelry business started as a small hobby, making bracelets for free for friends of mine... after watching a Lord of The Rings marathon. When I realized that I could sell them, Sneath's Chainmaille was born!

I certainly understand how people can find such joy in looking at a sunset and reveling in the beauty of God's creation, but instead I've found this beautiful symmetry in linking hundreds and thousands of little rings together and seeing the patterns and shapes they form. I personally find it amazing, so I will keep doing it until my wrists go out (hopefully they don't)!

I started with bracelets, then very quickly switched to mostly stretchy bracelets because they are much easier to make, and easier for customers to get on and off. I had tried wrapping a few marbles by the time I started my Etsy site, but had never sold any, and so I didn't list them at first. When I did list the first one, it sold within the hour! What was more amazing was that it was my first sale!! Since then they've sort of become my trademark :)

More recently I've been delving into 3D maille sculptures, and dabbling in scales.
