It is our pleasure to introduce Nelly Villegas of NellywithWings as this week's Featured Artist. Nelly creates a wide variety of colorfully bright accessories and gift items from her home in Toronto, Ontario.

Introduction to you:

I am originally from Mexico, but have spent the last 14 years in Toronto, Canada, with my husband and son. I am an Architect, working full-time at the firm where the famous CN tower design was conceived over 40 years ago. I have a love for bright colours and Mexican crafts. The nuns taught me in elementary school the basics of hand sewing and crochet, but my grandma had a great influence on my love for fabrics and sewing notions, as she is a retired seamstress, who made plenty of my ballet costumes, which my mom and I spend countless hours covering in sequins and beads. I recently discovered I love sewing and pattern alterations, and have a lot to learn.

I met Jesus early in life, thanks to going to my grandparents' church, where they were pastors. I remember the night I asked Jesus to be my Saviour and best friend, all by myself, when I was 11 years old. I have to thank my parents and grandparents for raising me up in a church were the Holy Spirit could be sensed strongly and occasionally seen in action, like in the book of Acts.

Custom Business Card Holder

Nelly has graciously agreed to give away a custom business card holder from her shop. For a chance to win the a brightly colored card holder like the one pictured above, please visit and favorite Nelly's Etsy shops: NellywithWings and ZipsnSupplies. Then return here and comment, telling us which item you like the best in either of Nelly's shops. The winner will be chosen at random on random.org. Be sure to leave your email address so we can contact you if you are the lucky winner. The winner will be announced in next Wednesday's Featured Artist post. (Regular comments - those without naming the favorite item - are not considered entries.)

How did you get your start on Etsy?

I stumbled upon Etsy as I was browsing for inspiration on the BurdaStyle website. I noticed that members of that website had their creations for sale on Etsy, so I became curious, and next thing I knew, I had a bag for sale.

How did you choose your shop name?

Once someone had a vision of my husband and me. He saw that I had wings, and my husband had a parachute. The wings have been mentioned again on different occasions, and I decided I wanted to acknowledge them in my shop name and my avatar.
I compare my wings to what the bible says in Isaiah 40:31 "But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint" (NVI). Referring to my wings is a daily reminder to focus my hope on my heavenly Daddy.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Well, my husband and I drop our little one off at school, then go to work downtown Toronto, then come home to our daily household chores. While my little one takes his bath, I grab a small stool, sit by the bathtub and grab a project, either a bracelet a little pouch to edge stitch, or some crochet. Then comes story time, then a bit of TV watching with my love. On weekends we relax, eat out, go to church and I get to spend time at the sewing machine. Not a very exciting daily life, I know, but I cherish every moment (after work, that is).

If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be?

This is a hard one, as I love to travel, but I think I would like to spend a clear day at the top of Mount Everest, just so I can see what it means to be at the top of the highest mountain on earth.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

I like this one, but only from the King James version "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Jeremiah 29:11

What is your favorite Etsy item listing to feature?

I am very partial to this yellow coffee sleeve. It is also one of my most popular items in the shop.

Where else can we find you on the Internet?

I'd think that after chatting so often, I'd already know these answers about you... but that wasn't the case:)

I just saw Nelly's book cover... very cool. I also have been eyeing the tortilla warmers for awhile:)

Nelly has a special place in my heart. Both her shops are so bright and colorful, just like she is. I am partial to the business card holders - main reason for that is THE BEAUTIFUL MEXICAN FABRIC. Who could resist?
