How did you get your start on Etsy?
Crafts and sewing have been a love of mine since I was young. I get it from my mom, who is much more of a seamstress than I, but she and my two sisters and I, all love to create in different ways.
I tried selling my crafts on and off again through the years but it wasn't easy with a young family. At one point I decided to just give it up, but a few years ago, I was asked to help with a "Craft day" for a women's group at my church. Bam! The craft juices started flowing again! I started creating for family and gifts but I was making more than I could give away, so, I had to look into selling again, and after some searching, I found Etsy!

How did you choose your shop name?
My shop name, well, I gained a nick name of "Betty" because people have told me I laugh like Betty Rubble from the Flintstones. So, as I was initially creating with beads, I picked the name "Betty's Beads", but as I incorporated other crafts I decided I needed something that said more than just beads. Finally it dawned on me, by just changing Betty Rubble to Betty's "Rubble" it was perfect!

What does a typical day look like for you?
It's hard to say what a typical day for me is. I'm a stay at home mom and my kids are older, so I'm quite flexible with my schedule. Some days are gung-ho craft days (especially if a craft boutique is coming up), other days I may be watching old movies and playing Candy Crush!! I'm always surrounded by my craft/supplies though so even when I'm watching movies, I'm usually working on something or I'm on Etsy working on my shop, making treasuries or participating in team events.

If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be?
There are a few places in the world I'd like to see someday, but really, anywhere that I could spend time with good friends or family.

Wide Stretch Lace Headwrap
Wide Stretch Lace Headwrap

How did you get your start on Etsy?
I had a false start while living in Turkey. While there, I picked up the habit of headcovering, and learned how to sew a square scarf into a pre-tied headscarf. I wanted to fill my shop with Turkish headscarves, but I was too busy with my teaching to grow that business. It gave me a taste of Etsy, though, and I was hooked. When I came back to America I started a new shop, after thinking good and hard about what I wanted to accomplish with it.

black elastic ribbon headband with pearl accent by AdornedHearts
Introduction to you:

I am a 26-year-old Christian wife, hopeful mother, and a para-educator--which basically means I do whatever a teacher does not have the time to do (such as tutoring, one-on-one behavior management, stapling vocabulary words to card stock...anything, really). I do this part-time so that I still have time to grow my business, as well as take care of my home and work on the logistics of becoming a mother. My husband and I are currently in the process of becoming licensed as “foster-to-adopt” parents. We will receive children into our home who are in need of a long-term or permanent family. We are also about to undergo embryo adoption; adopting another couple's embryos and carrying them as if they were my own genetic children.

My main reason for starting my handmade business was to provide a supplemental income that would first allow us to save the money required for adoption, and secondly to help my husband support us when we do have children. I plan on staying at home, and even home-schooling, so I needed a way to work from home. I have always been creative and entrepreneurial, so having my own handmade business simply allows me to be who I am and to share my creativity with others. I try to bless as many people as I can with my handmade items; it is my love language, really. Besides making custom pieces as gifts, I have been able to share my products with fund-raising efforts. Through my business I am able to help a cause or organization, even when I don't have the financial means to make a big impact. I also use my business to bring awareness to certain causes, such as foster care and the needs of foster children.

I love what I do, and I love my supporters (customers as well as those who simply promote my business) for helping me to grow and expand my reach and impact. It is truly nourishing to my soul, and my aim is to nourish others at the same time. My business name is Adorned Hearts because I never want to forget to focus on my spiritual adornment while reaching others and ministering to their hearts as well.

1 Peter 3:3-4 (ESV) says, “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious”. A new pair of earrings can put a little spring in your step, which energizes you to go out and be who you are meant to be. But at the same time, we women can lose focus on the internal when we hone in on enriching our physical beauty. We must strive to be balanced, and adorn our hearts as well as our bodies. This is the challenge I accept, and I hope to help other women with it as well. Eventually, I hope to start an Adorned Hearts blog to gather women together so that we can support each other in this and in so many other challenges we face. I appreciate you taking the time to read this, and hear what's on my heart. May God bless and enrich you!

What does a typical day look like for you?

I work a few days a week, sometimes half days but usually full school days. I come home with enough time to make dinner, and I work on my business most evenings while my husband grades papers. On days I do not work at the school, I get to work on many aspects of my business in one day. Everything from designing prototypes to marketing to talking with my supporters about new products or design adjustments.

If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be? Right now, I am very homesick for Turkey. If I could go anywhere right now, it would be Istanbul but I would not be able to stay for just one day. So I might have to choose Budapest instead. :-)

What is your favorite Etsy item listing to feature?
My hair chains are one of my favorite items. They are delicate, elegant, and versatile. I designed them to clip into my flower clips, felt bow clips or to be styled on their own. I appreciate the simplicity of being able to put together many looks with only a few pieces, whether it is with accessories or clothing, and that is where the design for these hair chains came from.

Make a Joyful Noise Scripture Art Print

Introduction to you:

My name is Jackie Williams. My shop is willow of wonder. The name was born out of my love of whimsical things. I like willow trees and a google search revealed to me that in Christian art the willow represents the gospel. So it's really gospel of wonder, which seemed perfect.

Before having kids I was a television reporter and producer. I actually still freelance as a producer. I think the art of starting with an idea and turning it into something has always been a passion for me, in whatever form.

But this willow of wonder adventure taps into the child-like free side of me. I still love rainbows and unicorns, butterflies, and wee little forest mice (in pictures only of course). Even my daughters laugh at how excited I get over miniature gardens or sweet little vintage trinkets.

I love the ocean, mountains, gardens, and flowers, hiking, and indoor cycling. I like tea parties, reading, and praise music. My women prayer warrior friends are so special to me, as is my family, but most of all Jesus. He's my everything. And I'm on this journey of accepting just how far and deep and wide His love is.

Super Girl Power of the Holy Spirit Scripture Artwork by willowofwonder
Super Girl Power of the Scripture Artwork

How did you get your start on Etsy?

Art and creating have always been therapeutic for me. In 2009 I was diagnosed with lupus. I had times when it was so bad I couldn't even hold a pencil because my joints hurt so much. There were some very dark days, but as the disease began to go into remission I felt this prompting to draw. I started by making the dolphin girl as a baptism gift for a pastor friend's daughter. And it was with that drawing that I realized I might be able to offer something that wasn't really out there. So that is how willow of wonder was born. I opened the shop a little before Christmas in 2010. It honestly was a forgotten childhood dream tucked away to one day be an artist. Without ever having studied art I don't quite own the word artist yet. My girls so sweetly say I'm the best artist they know. And I fight telling them oh no I'm not. Because to them I am. And I believe Jesus sees us all as artists in our own way.

I did my first craft fair last spring and am doing three this spring. They're a lot of work, but oh so fun. It felt again like I was tapping into those childhood memories of playing store. Only it was real. I love meeting people and sharing my love for putting scripture all over our homes. I do mean all over, by the way. I recently listed two huge columns from "In the Mirror of God's word I See…." all across a double mirrored closet door in my office. I LOVE having it all there in front of me.

Being able to hear the stories of how people are touched by my art, or who they are sending a piece to and why has been the biggest blessing and warms my heart every single time. The most amazing inspiration and reason to keep on doing it is when a missionary had the warrior girl printed onto fabric and made into pillows for a group of Indian girls as a present for finishing a bible study based on the Chronicles of Narnia.

I love doing custom work for people and am just about to begin expanding into that more formally.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days are so different than I thought they'd be. I had been a homeschooling mama, but because of a series of life circumstances I've had to put my kids in school. They're 12, 9, and 7. I wake around 5:30 or 6:00 to have quiet time alone. One daughter is off by seven to her carpool pick up. Then the next two are at eight and 8:30. I seem to be involved in some kind of group almost every morning. I have had the blessing of being able to take Chelsea Cameron (Kirk Cameron's wife's) bible study on parenting and families this year. It has been so amazing. That's on Monday. Tuesday I do my Community Bible Study, Wednesday is another group at my church and working in my first grader's class. Thursday and Fridays I make appointments and get housework as well as etsy orders done. The time while they are in school actually goes so fast. I also try to squeeze in a few days to spin (indoor cycling). I always say if I don't make time to study the word, spin, and create I start to get a little off kilter. It keeps me sane and happy. Truly. Once all the pick ups happen from school we hang out, do homework, have dinner, and it's time to get ready for bed. I always, always read with my kids before bed. I love it as much as them. We've been reading all of the American Girl series lately. Can I confess I cry at least once in each series. And again my girls laugh at me, there she goes again. What can I say, I'm a total sap. Sad tears, happy tears. I can't help it. Sometimes things are so beautiful, so moving, so empowering I'm just moved to tears.

If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be?

If I could be anywhere in the world for a day I think I'd love to go to the South of France. I have yet to go, but my best friend (we met in the first grade) says it's so us. We have a little dream for a girl trip in a few years for a big birthday. The lavender, the linens, the cheese, the countryside. Oh sigh. Just imagining it is so dreamy.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

My favorite verse is Roman 15:13. "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

What is your favorite Etsy listing to feature?

I really love the Trust in the Lord print with the children pushing along the wagon. It and the Make A Joyful Noise print. It was originally a life size mural I painted in my children's preschool music room. It was something I was nervous to take on, but was so amazing to tackle and see come to life. I'm very into challenging myself. Sometimes I can get a little frozen when I think too much. It's taken years, but I've learned to just roll up your sleeves and try. And if you fail it's ok. You're learning and you can try again.

Introduction to you:
Hello I am Jane Lloyd and I live in St Albans in the UK, fairly close to London . I am 55, a Mum of 4 grown up children and a part time Teacher. I love to take an active part in my Church and am 'at home' singing or organising food! I love to teach Sunday School to the very young and am a member of 2 book groups and 2 choirs! I have just started singing lessons which are great fun.

How did you get your start on Etsy?
For years I had made items for the PTA at the Junior school all my children attended. With four little people I was an active member of the Craft Club for many years!
My little ones all grew up and I missed making crafts so I decided a webite would be a good idea. the best idea would be for my son to build me one. He excitedly showed me an article about a prolific Etsy seller who sold thousands of finger puppets. Hey, Mum you could do that too!

How did you choose your shop name?
I was volunteering making costumes for a music camp, in a converted cowshed just before starting out on Etsy and the song "Live a little, Love a little make a little dough" (as in money) kept in my mind after the show!

The only change is that I am 'all in one word' so Lovealittle was born.

What does a typical day look like for you?
I am a part time teacher so most days I work in the classrom teaching subjects I enjoy, Art Textiles, Textiles and Food as Technology subjects and also the extra-curricular Young Enterprise where students run their own business for a year. I work in a lovely, Catholic Girls' School , twenty minutes’ walk from my house (this is important as I don't drive)!

I tend to work on Etsy things during the holidays, weekends and some evenings.  I love the support and chat with my Etsy team mates and have met a fair number of UK Etsy sellers in real life!

I like the challenge of custom orders best and have really missed 'Alchemy' which accounted for half of my sales on Etsy when it was alive. For new folks it was an Etsy platform for custom work. I have recently made a model of a burnt souffle and am about to finish a jammie dodger biscuit pillow which are amazing custom orders and have challenged me!

I love to see where my goods end up all over the world. The most touching story was when an American lady purchased a personalised doll to take out to a little girl in Ethiopia. She was in the process of adopting the little girl and was able to return to collect the little girl and her beloved doll.

I am also a stay-at-home artist, crafter, photographer, wife, mother and grandmother.  I strive to honor God in all of my endeavors.  For as long as I can remember I've had a passion for creating things.  My favorite ways to create are drawing, doodling, painting, photography, Photoshop, sewing, and home decorating. I have been incredibly blessed with a wonderful and very supportive husband, 4 children, one son-in-law, 5 grandchildren and 2 little dogs. They all bring so much love and inspiration into my life!

-How did you get your start on Etsy? My daughter Mary has an Etsy shop where she sells her beautiful crocheted and knitted creations.  She encouraged me to start my own shop.

Needle Felted Wool Lamb

Introduction to you: I am a wife, mother and grandmother! This new Grand-mothering season of life is so much fun. I love the flexibility of working for myself, which allows for me to be available to my extended family.
I have always loved working with my hands. From a young age to the present…my hands like to be busy. I like to “practice” the verse in Proverbs 31:13…”She is always gathering wool and flax and enjoys making things with her hands.”
I’ve done a variety of crafting and creating; from knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, quilting, rubber stamping, scrapbooking, needle felting, sewing, and mixed media art. My passion is creating with my hands. My very favorite is to create one of a kind, unique pieces that incorporate Bible verses or words of encouragement in the art and convey the personality and likes of the recipients.

How did you get your start on Etsy?

I have managed and worked in retail gift shops and a crafting retailer throughout my life, so when I unexpectedly “lost” my job 3 plus years ago, I saw this as an opportunity to open up a shop on Etsy. It never ceases to amaze me how I see God’s providential hand in all of this, and His perfect timing. I truly am living a dream in owning my little shop here on Etsy.

How did you choose your shop name?
I live in an old apple orchard, with a creek running along the back property line. At one time the acreage was large with apple and pear trees, but was divided up in parcels. Pear Creek Lane is a road that borders our property, and since “Apple Creek Cottage” was already taken as a shop name on Etsy, I checked for Pear Creek Cottage, and sure enough it was available…so I officially made that my shop name.
pink and purple felt hearts by Pear Creek Cottage

What does a typical day look like for you?
I get up and have my “quiet time” with a steaming cup of coffee. After that, I check my orders that have come in and begin to process them. I try to get the orders in the mail, before our mail carrier arrives, which saves me a trip into town. I then start to work on upcoming orders for the next day/days. Often, I try to squeeze some creative time in the afternoons (not near as often as I wish), or I use that time to list new items and do social media marketing etc.
I also have opportunities to play with my granddaughter. Building with Legos, can inspire creativity for later!

If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be?
Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I feel a kinship to the artisan community in that area. I love how it inspires creativity in me.

What is your favorite Bible verse?
Oh boy, it is hard to only pick one, as I have several that are my favorites throughout the spiritual seasons of my life.
I will have to say, Proverbs 3:5-6, and Jeremiah 29:11

Now for the interview:
Introduction on you  Let’s see…a little about me: I've always lived on the US West Coast (California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska – in that order). I’m happily married and mom to two sweet and sassy children. I love Jesus and everything about Him. I am a children’s ministry director by day and a crocheting fiend by night! I love people, but I also need time away to recharge. I thoroughly love being a part of the Etsy community!

How did you get your start on Etsy?: Back in 2012 (makes it sound so long ago - ha!) we had the snowiest winter on record here in Anchorage. I think I unconsciously coped with all that snow by crocheting every chance I got. I called it crochet therapy. As I was posting some of my creations right along on Facebook, my friends were encouraging me to offer them for sale. One person mentioned Etsy and the rest is history. :)

How did you choose your shop name?: I just kept playing with different ideas and since I live north in Alaska and I love the idea of home being a "cottage" (inspired by "Rose Cottage" in Tales of Avonlea) the name struck a cord with me.

What does a typical day look like for you?: I work part-time at our church so I get up, do some online time with Etsy, my blog, research, Facebook, etc., then get ready and head to work. After I get back home I generally putz around the house, make dinner, do some crocheting for orders or new patterns I'm working on, and connect with my family. My home is my favorite happy place.

If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be? Hmmmm...probably somewhere warm and tropical...but I could really enjoy being so many different places. Hard question!

What is your favorite Bible verse? That's easy: Romans 15:13 "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." My life verse!

What is your favorite Etsy item listing to feature? I think probably it would have to be my very first boot cuff pattern (. It is the most popular item I've ever sold, which is really funny since I didn't even know what a boot cuff was before I opened my shop. :)

Exodus 20 - Ten Commandments Word Art
Introduction to you:
My name is Ivelisse Alvarez, but most people call me Ive.  In Spanish it sounds like, Ebay exept with the “b” is a “v” or “evay.”

I am from the Dominican Republic.  I arrived to the United States with my family in July 2008 and we made Pennsylvania home for almost 5 years.   About five months ago we decided to move our family to Indiana because of a better job opportunity for my husband.  I am married to a wonderful man of God.  We have 2 boys and 1 girl.  I love my family and one of the things I enjoy the most is spending time with them.  I studied graphic design and I love to decorate.  I received an Associate in Arts and applied Sciences.  I have also received many hours of academic instruction and hands on training in drawing, painting, photography, jewelry creation and design, and interior design.  I love to decorate especially for events such as weddings and sweet sixteen.   I enjoy nature very much particularly in the autumn because of all the beautiful textures and colors.

Inspirational Spanish Prayer
How did you get your start on Etsy?
In 2011 my English teacher saw some of the pieces I had created and suggested I place a few of them on Etsy.  After brainstorming with my husband on a name, I immediately opened it without much knowledge or training on how to use the website.  In the first five months there were no sales and very little visits to my page.  It wasn’t till March 2012 that finally I had one sale, then in August of the same year another sale.  As you can see for me it was a slow start, and if it wasn’t for my husband’s support and encouragement I might’ve given up and thrown in the towel.  One morning I woke up inspired with a prayer on my mind.  I decided I would put it on an art piece and designed it subway-art style in Spanish and placed it on my Etsy store.  A client wrote me an email that morning requesting something similar with verse 1 Corinthians 13, but in English.  At that moment I felt things would turn around in a marvelous way, and they did.

At that moment I decided to learn more about how Etsy functions and ways I can improve my store.  It has been amazing to see how the whole online world can help you reach millions of people all around the world with a simple click.  After many months I now can see the results of slow and steady growth.  I give all the thanks and glory to God.   My focus has been bible verses and quotes incorporated on burlap inspirational designs for wedding décor, signs and accessories.

I love what I do whether it sells or not, but I especially love when people feel happiness and joy with a piece I’ve created.  Each review or comment about my art inspires me and motivates me to continue creating art.

How did you choose your shop name?
My husband and I started brainstorming name ideas for the Etsy store.  One thing we concluded long ago in regards to naming a business is the simpler more organic the name and relative to the business, the better.  So he said to me you will not only be creating everything but you’ll also be doing all photography, placement, publicity, customer service and finally handling the shipping process.  It will all be done by Ive.  Why not just name it, “ByIve?”  And voila!

I am a night owl therefore I prefer to be up all night and sleep during the day.  Again, that is my preference and I do it when I can because it is with the quiet of the night I get most inspired and creative ideas.  But I’ll give you “typical day” when I am up with the sun.   I wake up around 6:30 a.m.; send my kids to school, my husband to work and with a cup of coffee on one hand I read my daily devotional.   After my morning prayer I turn the music on nearly all day, I love listening to music while I work on a project.  I then take a look at my agenda for the day and prioritize what needs to be done first.  I continue with pending orders and work on what needs to be printed, recorded or glued, packaged and shipped out.  I then get in my car, run any necessary errands and make a stop in the post office to drop off anything that needs to go out.   I try to finish everything I have pending for the rest of the day but most days I cannot so I just try to do as much as I can, what I can’t finish goes on the next day.  By this time it’s almost time for my family to come home so I make dinner.  After the kids are all tucked in bed on some nights I love to sit next to my husband and watch a romantic movie particularly those with happy endings.

If you could be anywhere in the world for one day, where would it be?
I would love to visit Paris, Italy, Mexico and many, many more countries.  But if I have to pick just one place to be right at this instant I’d like to be in one of the warm beaches of my Caribbean country, particularly in Punta Cana or La Romana.

What is your favorite Bible verse?
I have several favorites, but I particularly love the one below,
"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." 2 Peter 1:5-8
